Fayetteville NC is the home of the largest military base in the world. Fort Bragg Army Base began as a training center during WWI and is now home to Special Forces, Delta Force, Airborne Rangers, and the 82nd Airborne. Many military people have retired here because they are familiar with the area and because of available services for veterans from the Fayetteville VA Medical Center. Due to the presence of Fort Bragg and Pope AFB, there are more than 42,000 soldiers during peacetime. The average age of the population was about 21.5, which is much younger than other cities. A few decades ago, downtown Fayetteville was the center of nightlife, but much of the downtown area is run down now. Most of the Fayetteville nightlife is on Bragg Blvd. There are lots of good restaurants throughout the city. Shopping is at Cross Creek Mall, Skibo Rd, and Bragg Blvd. One of the largest events in Fayetteville is the annual Dogwood Festival, in the center of downtown Fayetteville. There are several very good biker bars and tatoo shops in the area. Employment opportunities to earn living wages are scarce, and the crime rate is high. The largest civilian employer is Kelly-Springfield, a plant that makes tires. Fayetteville State University and Fayetteville Technical Community College are the two largest colleges. Military and dependents receive medical treatment at Womack Army Hospital. The largest civilian hospitals are Cape Fear Medical Center and Haismith Rainey Hospital.
